Reiki is a technique similar to the laying on of hands. Reiki (which means "universal life force energy") was developed in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui in Japan. Since the 1940s, when the technique was brought to the U.S, Reiki has flourished and is now practiced by millions of people worldwide. There are many variations of Reiki, the most common being the Usui method. Reiki energy has its own intelligence and flows to the parts of the body that need it the most. The recipient draws the energy as needed from the practitioner.

Reiki is extremely gentle and is ideal for animals that cannot be touched with any amount of pressure, such as those recovering from surgery or animals that have been traumatized. In fact, Reiki can be performed without actually touching the animal at all.

The effects of Reiki include: deep relaxation, elimination of energy blockages, relief from mental and emotional stress, and the stimulation of the healing process.
